What do we see?

What do we see?

Sometimes when we take time to look at how we are meeting each of our needs in life, we may find we are missing some things. We can easily forget, get lost, and sometimes end up suffering.

Let’s look briefly together with some questions to ponder. As we explore our needs for ourselves and plan to share The 5 Needs with family, friends, clients, or students, we want to look at our own life first. How are we doing?

We may only need to make a few adjustments, but we may need an overhaul, too. We don’t know if we don’t take the time to look and see with openness, vulnerability, and honesty. No one is doing everything “right” (whatever that really is), but we are all doing our best.  Doing the best we can, does not mean we cannot change. There is no judgment. There are also no comparisons. We each do what we can. We are each on our own journey, and our paths can be similar but different too.

Here are the needs we want to consider:

  1. Staying Alive
  2. Love and Belonging
  3. Freedom and Boundaries
  4. Power
  5. Fun

Right now, how are we doing?

No judgment. Just be curious.

Before we teach anyone or try to share The 5 Needs, let’s look at us…inside…what do you see? However, we do not have to be meeting every day, every day, perfectly, to begin to share and teach this. We need to be aware of where we are, how we are doing, and doing our own work. Being an example, keeping it real. Here are a few questions to consider.

  1. Staying Alive: How is our health? How are we doing with exercise, water, sleep, and eating? How is our emotional and mental health doing now? If Spirituality is a part of our life, where are we there? What specific things are you doing for yourself and your total health and well-being?
  2. Love and Belonging: It starts with us, our relationship with ourselves. Rumi asked: “Do you make regular visits to yourself?”  How can we know ourselves if we spend no time with ourselves? How do you see yourself, deep inside, when no one else can see? What do you see there? What do you hear yourself saying? Do you have friends, groups, or any place (or group of people) where you know you belong?
  3. Freedom and Boundaries: This can go unnoticed until it is hard to turn around, but we can change. Do we allow ourselves the freedom to meet all of our needs? Do we set healthy boundaries for ourselves? Are we actually unfree in our lives and need legal help? Do we need support or counseling to learn how to become free with our choices and situations?  Do we suffer from any addictions or disordered eating? Have we allowed ourselves to go without setting boundaries emotionally, physically, and mentally? What is the cost?
  4. Power: What are we doing to empower our own life? Where and how do we find power, strength, comfort, and the push we need? Some find power in spiritual practices. Some find power in music, meditation, running, and walking. Some need to be around others to feel they have power, but discovering power when we are all alone can be extremely helpful and freeing.
  5. Fun: What is fun for you? What do you like to do? What do you enjoy? How often do you do the things that give you joy and life? Do you have a few people you can call up and meet with to do something fun? Do we always need someone else to have fun? Can we have fun, an enjoyable time, all alone with ourselves?

The Bottom Line

How do we see ourselves? Asking ourselves this simple question can open our eyes to the wonder of who we really are or take us to an opportunity to learn who we are now, no matter what happens or has happened in our lives. Many of us need a hand on this inner journey; please find someone to help you if needed. Simply and seriously ask ourselves:

How do I see me?

Here is a thought for us to consider….If I could see what the angels see….Sometimes we may want to change our view, our perspective so we can see clearly.

“If I Could See (What The Angels See)” lyrics

If I could see what the angels see
Behind the walls, beneath the sea
Under the avalanche, through the trees
Gone would be the mystery
If I could see

If I could hear what angels hear
The thunderous sound of a crashing tear
Holy, Holy in my ear
I’d never doubt that God is near
If I could hear

I’d see that love will conquer hate
There’s always hope, it’s not too late
I’d find the truth is easy to believe
If I could see, yeah

If I could know what angels know
That death’s goodbye is love’s hello
And spirits come and spirits go
I feel them but they never show
If I could know

If I could stand where angels stand
Watch this world while God commands
And see how love designed this plan
Reminders on His feet and hands
If I could stand

I’d see that love will conquer hate
There’s always hope, it’s not too late
I’d find the truth is easy to believe
If I could see
If I could hear
If I could know
There’s nothing to fear

If I could stand
If I could see
Maybe that’s finally eternity
Oh…

If I could see what the angels see
Behind the walls to you and me
And let the truth set me free
I’d live this life differently
If I could, if I could see

I’d see that love will conquer hate
There’s always hope, it’s not too late
I’d find the truth is easy to believe

Like sunlight shining on my face
I’d feel the presence of your grace
I’d find the truth and finally be set free
If I could see, if I could see
If I could see, one day I’ll see
