Morning Meetings (or anytime class meetings) can become better with The 5 Needs
Many teachers are incorporating Morning Meetings into their day to build a sense of community within their class. As students see each other as equals, all being human and with some of the same needs, a sense of community can build. In addition, Morning Meetings can also build understanding and acceptance, and also perhaps compassion and empathy. Another wonderful reason to have Morning Meetings is to provide a place for students to be heard and seen. We all want and need to be seen, heard, understood. Morning Meetings can open new opportunities for this to occur for some students.
What if you had a monthly guide to provide a framework with a topic each week? Keeping it simple with choices and opportunities, including:
- A few specific questions to ask.
- A few things to consider when talking about each need.
- Some ideas to help you address one need per month.
NOTE: Sometimes one of The 5 Needs can stir up pain in people who have trauma or are in difficult situations. Stay aware and alert of this possibility and contact the school mental health staff as a support so the student (and the family) can get the support needed.
The 5 Needs can also open up curiosity about ourselves or others and how the needs may be met.
We will be providing more materials in the near future, in the meantime, feel free to reach out.
