Life can change in the blink of an eye.
Many of us have experienced this fact in different ways. Perhaps it was the death of a loved one, as in this song. We may have experienced a change in our life from a natural disaster, and many things can cause our life to change in the blink of an eye. We don’t know when or how.
In the blink of an eye, everything can change.
Here is one song that can remind us that we are all human, we are not forever young, and things are not always easy. Our life can end as we know it, just like that. Our friends and loved ones can be gone, injured or challenged in significant ways. Grief can be complicated. Let’s be there for ourselves and for each other. My heart aches for the ones in this song, and it causes me to pause….to ponder, pray, give thanks, and be sensitive to others’ needs. Sometimes we do not know what others are really going through.
We are each doing the best we can. And we all need each other.
A sickness, a car wreck, a natural disaster, or death can send us into a place we were not expecting. Maybe it will be a dark space where we will need to lean on the life we built prior, and we can do what we can now. Maybe we will crash, hit bottom and not know how to handle the pain, despair, and deep hurt. There is hope.
This won’t stop rough stuff, but it can help us. Let’s build a love for ourselves and those around us the best we can, knowing life can change in the blink of an eye. Let’s hold each other. Let’s be kind. Extra kind and gracious.
Power, Healing, Hope, and Truths in Music
This song helps us see that life can change in the blink of an eye. This is not easy to hear, feel, or imagine. This song is based on a true story of Amy’s son having to bury a friend who was killed in a car wreck. This is a gift of love for us; we all will someday know some time of loss. We are not alone. There is always hope.
Shovel In Hand
Amy Grant
Life can change in the blink of an eye
You don’t know when and you don’t know why
“Forever Young” is a big fat lie
For the one who lives and the one who dies
I watched my son – shovel in hand
Go from bulletproof boy to a full-grown man
The cool dark dirt on the casket lands
Nineteen years old and he’s buryin’ a friend
Goodbye two boys, hello one man
This son of mine will leave in the fall
New friends might ask why he stand so tall
His life was changed with a telephone call
Not even he understands it all
I watched my son – shovel in hand
Go from bulletproof boy to a full-grown man
The cool dark dirt on the casket lands
Nineteen years old and he’s buryin’ a friend
Goodbye two boys, hello one man
I watched my son – shovel in hand
Go from bulletproof boy to a full-grown man

May we love and care for each other.
May we each have what we need and be able to provide for others along our path.
Maybe we stay open, aware, alert, and sensitive.
May we practice mindfulness each day, in our own ways, the best we can.
May our life be full of peace.
