Don’t Try So Hard (Amy Grants song included)

We often try so hard. Sometimes too hard. We can struggle at times to meet each of our needs when we don’t need to work so hard. We can become weary and worn out.  We can see The 5 Needs all around us. They do matter. Our behaviors and feelings, along with our thoughts, can be influenced by how we do or do not identify and meet our needs.  Let’s consider the words to this song and our own life. We can aim higher and higher, we can become people pleaser and miss our life.

Don’t Try So Hard

Another Monday comes and I just wanna breathe
‘Cause it’s a long, long week for someone wired to please
I keep taking my aim, pushing it higher
Wanna shine bright, even brighter now
Wish I would tell myself

Don’t try so hard
God gives you grace and you can’t earn it
Don’t think that you’re not worth it
Because you are
He gave you His love and He’s not leaving
Gave you His Son so you’d believe it
You’re lovely even with your scars
Don’t try so hard

Do you remember how the summers felt when we were kids?
Oh, we didn’t think much about it, we just lived
Taking our time, beautiful leisure
When did we start, trying to measure up
And all this time, love has been trying to tell us

Don’t try so hard
God gives you grace and you can’t earn it
Don’t think that you’re not worth it
Because you are
He gave you His love and He’s not leaving
Gave you His Son so you’d believe it
You’re lovely even with your scars
Don’t try so hard

Don’t try so hard

Don’t try so hard
God gives you grace
You can’t earn it
Stop thinking you’re not worth it
Because you are
He gave you His love and He’s not leaving
Gave you His Son so you’d believe it
You’re lovely even with your scars
Lovely the way you are
So open up your lovely heart
Don’t try so hard

Have you ever been “weary to the bones” and needed to stop and hear this song? Here you go, give yourself a gift of time and let your heart be renewed and refreshed as Amy and James Taylor sing to you…to each one of us…and to themselves too, which makes it even more beautiful.   https://youtu.be/OfGvXfe9LK8

We are all human. We all do our best, but sometimes, we are trying too hard. May we have grace with ourselves and one another.

I can imagine each of The 5 Needs in this song. Can you?

And here is just Amy and her band singing the song.

Breathe. Relax. Breathe in. Breathe out. You are lovely, just as you are. Don’t try so hard, please.
